International

IUPUI Plan for a New Era of Internationalization

What IUPUI Departments Can Do to Involve STAFF in International Programming:

  • Devise a form (contact Maggie Stimming if you want a copy of a sample one) to identify staff interest and gauge good "fit" with study abroad programs.
  • Offer language classes on work time in your department (if there is interest and it addresses a need) or pay fees (tuition courtesy already covers tuition) for employees to take classes already scheduled on campus.
  • Encourage those who indicated interest in internationalization (on the interest form) to get on Cathie Carrigan’s listserv (send an e-mail to LISTSERV@LISTSERV.IUPUI.EDU with "SUBSCRIBE INTLNEWS" in the body of the e-mail - no subject is required) and attend a variety of the programs offered.
  • Encourage staff to let Cathie (cmcarrig@iupui.edu ), know of interest in being a volunteer language translator (indicate the language you’re proficient in) and interest in assisting with the International Fair on campus.
  • Encourage staff to join the listserv to be kept up to date on upcoming activities of the Max Kade German-American Research and Resource Center, www.ulib.iupui.edu/kade, by sending a note to mkgac@iupui.edu.
  • Check out sources of internal finding for faculty and units at http://www.indiana.edu/~ovpia/ovpia.
  • Have a departmental discussion about how inclusion of staff members might be of benefit in facilitating the department’s international programs, not just here but abroad, as well.
  • Consider the inclusion of funds for participation of a staff person in study abroad program grant proposals.
  • Identify potential staff opportunities (training/teaching, organization/administration, engineering, chaperoning, language translation) in the study abroad programs your department offers and encourage interested staff members to apply. Have an independent panel of judges select one or more persons. Past international travel should not be a requirement (though for some needs, it may be helpful and should not be discounted) because openness would allow you to expand the horizons of someone who may not have had the chance before but has the interest and applicable skills.
  • Review the many English-subtitled films in more than 40 foreign languages at the Indianapolis-Marion County Public Library to see if they could be effective for use in staff meetings.
  • Use the variety of Spanish language resources at http://www.liberalarts.iupui.edu/mlrc/languages/spanish.html.
  • Host speakers at department meetings who can bring up the level of international knowledge for faculty and staff.
