Employee Relations ensures workplace issues are handled effectively and expediently in order to remove barriers to successful job performance and foster a positive work environment.   We provide confidential guidance and consultation on managing performance and behavior, mediating conflict in the workplace, investigating and resolving complaints, applying and interpreting employment laws and university policies, and maintaining positive relationships with our employee organizations.

Our services for employees include:

  • Providing advice and guidance on how to handle difficult situations such as problems with coworkers and/or supervisors, work performance issues, communication difficulties,  personal concerns, or mistreatment
  • Explaining employee rights and responsibilities
  • Handling complaints and investigating grievances
  • Assisting with understanding university policy
  • Responding to FMLA questions and concerns
  • Providing advocacy when appropriate

Our services for managers and supervisors include:

  • Providing guidance on managing performance and other on-the-job problems
  • Coaching on performance improvement and corrective action processes
  • Interpreting and administering university policy
  • Consulting on reductions in force, reorganizations, and work climate issues
  • Handling conflict resolution through one-on-one coaching, mediation, consultation, facilitation, and training
  • Assisting with FMLA compliance
  • Training on a variety of employee relations topics

Issues or problems that arise in the workplace may be addressed with the immediate supervisor or department head.  Employees can also seek assistance from the Employee Relations staff.  If a situation is discussed with the Employee Relations staff, confidentiality will be maintained to the extent possible.  Some issues may require further investigation or consultation with other campus departments.  In such cases, information will only be shared with other individuals on a need-to-know basis.
