Service Maintenance Staff

2.14 Seniority

This policy applies to appointed Service and Maintenance staff.
A. University seniority date

Full-time staff

When appointed staff complete the new employee evaluation period, the university seniority date is established. The date is based on when the employee began continuous employment at IU. Any full-time and continuous service as an hourly employee is credited when establishing this date.

Part-time staff

When appointed staff complete the new employee evaluation period, the university seniority date is established. The date is based on when the employee began continuous employment at IU. Any continuous hourly service (at the same or greater percentage as the FTE) in the same occupational unit is credited when establishing this date.

B. Occupational unit seniority date

1.   The occupational unit seniority date is based on when an employee began continuous employment in the current occupational unit. This includes continuous hourly service at the same or greater percentage FTE in the same occupational unit.

2.   Service and maintenance employees who are promoted to positions in other functional classifications and who return to service and maintenance positions will have their occupational unit seniority reinstated.

C. Definition of occupational unit

1.    An occupational unit is defined as an identifiable, separate unit of management. Common classifications of work (duties, responsibilities, qualification requirements, traditional lines of advancement, and/or interchange of duties) also define an occupational unit.

2.   SM positions are in an occupational unit separate from positions in other functional classifications (PA, CL, TE, RS, NU, PN, GS).

D. Loss of seniority

1. Seniority is lost under the following conditions:

a)      Voluntary or involuntary termination

b)   Transfer to nonappointed status

c)   After 12 months on the layoff list

d)   Failure to return without just cause after an employee’s leave of absence has expired

e)   Failure to return without just cause after notice of recall

f)    Retirement
