This policy applies to all appointed SM staff represented by AFSCME, Local 1477.
Release from work for the balance of one workday When conditions make it impossible or impractical for employees to work, department heads may release them for the balance of that workday. The chancellor must first approve such releases. All staff are released with no loss of pay.
Guidelines for closings of one or more days Whenever the workplace is closed for one or more days at the direction of the chancellor, all staff must cover the absence as described below.

SM staff may charge an absence of one or more days due to adverse or unsafe working conditions to an option listed below.

  • Accrued paid-time-off benefits
  • Accrued compensatory time
  • Absence without pay and with benefits
  • Work at a different campus location (assigned by the department head) Make up the time (assigned by the department head) on an hour-for-hour basis within the same workweek of the adverse incident. Departments are to report any make-up time on the payroll voucher and attach a memo of explanation

If a staff member terminates employment before making up the time, departments should note this on the payroll voucher so that final paychecks can be adjusted appropriately

Advance notice not to report to work Departments may be able to anticipate unsafe or adverse working conditions, allowing employees advance notice not to report to work. Under such circumstances, all staff must cover the absence by the respective options listed above.
