Tang Soo Do (pronounced tahng sue doe), a self-defense
martial art related to Tae Kwon Do, will be
offered on Fridays this fall semester. The series, open to both women and
men staff, students and faculty, is a collaboration between IUPUI HRA Work/Life
and the Student Wellness Coalition. Mike Foddrill, a 5th
degree black belt and certified instructor, will teach the class. Each
session builds on the previous session, so a commitment to attend all sessions
is needed, but an occasional miss is not critical. The registration form
for this free series is attached. Please complete, sign and fax it to me
at 274-5481. Please check with your doctor to be sure that this is an
appropriate activity for you before registering.
Tang Soo Do is a Korean martial art with roots over 2000 years old. The ultimate goal of all Tang Soo Do practitioners is to become the best persons they can be. This is achieved through vigorous mental and physical training. By pushing themselves and testing their limits, students are prepared to face the challenges of life - whether they are the stresses of work and family or self-defense. Tang Soo Do is comprised of traditional Korean kicking techniques as well as punches, joint locks and throws. People from all experience and fitness levels are encouraged to attend. This training offers benefits for everyone including building confidence, concentration, discipline, conditioning, tone, strength and general physical fitness.
As a form of self-defense training, it teaches you to survive common situations, as it focuses on real world application of Tang Soo Do techniques. It will not teach you to be the next martial arts movie star, but it will give you the tools you need to be confident in life and be the best you can be.

An e-mail reminder about the classes is sent to REGISTERED participants (but be aware that there can sometimes be a period of time between when you register and when we are able to add you to the list) before each class day at the beginning of the semester, but if you've registered, don't let lack of a reminder keep you from coming (just print off this e-mail so you'll have the dates/locations). Later in the semester you may only get a weekly reminder. If you are not sure you're at the right room in the Campus Center, you can also look at the electronic sign outside at least one of the doors of the room or ask at the information desk on the first floor. Here is a link to the campus map http://www.iupui.edu/misc/campusmap.pdf in case you are not familiar with the locations listed above.
Make personal wellness a priority by putting the above dates on your calendar now so that other events don't get scheduled during your Tang Soo Do time. If you are putting the dates on Outlook, you might have it remind you the day before so that you'll remember to bring your Tang Soo Do clothing, etc.
What Will the Class Be Like and What Will I Need? On the day of each Tang Soo Do class, you can change clothing, if need be, from Noon-12:05, attend the class from 12:05-12:45 and then change clothing again from 12:45-12:50. Thus the class will officially start at 12:05 and last until 12:45. So, if you're planning ahead, block your calendar from at least noon -1:00 on the dates (listed above) for the classes.
No special clothing is needed. Simply wear comfortable, stretchy clothing and, if wearing loose shorts/top, wear an appropriate close-fitting layer underneath. Bring water to keep yourself hydrated. Baby wipes and/or antiperspirant to use to freshen up after the class might be a good option.
Concerns about Extended Lunch Hour: If you are concerned that you can't walk to the location, change clothing, take the 40-minute class and then walk back to your office in an hour and are in a department where this might be a concern, consider asking your direct supervisor if you can do a trade-off -- agree to come in a few minutes early or stay a few extra minutes later to make up for the extra minutes that you might use at lunch time. Do this ahead of time, especially if you are covering a vital area, so that you or the supervisor can make arrangements to have the area covered.
