WorkSmart, an initiative of IUPUI Finance & Administration and Human Resources Administration, is designed to address the growing interest in working in more flexible ways, supporting IUPUI sustainability initiatives, enhancing recruitment and retention and helping members of the IUPUI family with more tools to save on gas costs by providing information about:

1)    Flexible Work Arrangements

The FWA document is very comprehensive, but no individual situation would ever require using all the sections.  It is designed to increase the chances of success by offering tools for users with a variety of different situations, approaches and comfort levels.  The idea was to provide a wealth of well-researched information  to choose from as he/she sees fit and to provide much of that information in a timesaving checklist format.  The only required piece is the “Work-at-Home Health and Safety Checklist,” which telecommuters must read and sign prior to the start of telecommuting and departments need to keep.

Some may take a formal approach and have every employee who requests an FWA review and sign the Overview and Guidelines section as well as completing the proposal form for the specific type of FWA requested.  Others might pull out the pieces they feel are applicable for them and that satisfy any concerns they may have and do a much shorter version.

2)    Alternative Commuting Options

IUPUI is an employer member of Central Indiana Commuter Services (CICS), a fact that entitles IUPUI constituents to free access to a car poolers match list and information about van pools and other commuting information.  For active users of alternative transportation the free Emergency Ride Home program is also available. IU also offers a money-saving Pre-Tax Commuter Benefit  that mass transit and CICS van pool users can take advantage of.

IUPUI also helps connect you to information about the IndyGo bus service (including the Red Line that runs through campus).
